Sepelio: Update and what not!

Heyyyyy loyal readers.

All…. 0 of you. Bastards.

Anyway, I have not been doing a great deal other than plotting to be awesome. This plotting involves things including: http://websound.ru/issues/171_175/laser-harp.jpg

Laser Harps! I decided to take a teeny little break from chemistry as it was devouring my immortal soul (which is reserved for Cthulhu).

Anyway I took a class called ‘Approaches to Multimedia’. Its been fairly straight forward so far. First assignment being one in ye olde audio.

I decided to go on a little tangent for this assignment. We were told to use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) to mess around with samples and make a song. I decided to rebel and do my own thing! I used Audacity in combination with LMMS http://lmms.sourceforge.net/ which turned out well. If anyone wants the samples I recorded just ask, they are just gibberish reversed essentially.

I ended up making this http://omploader.org/vMmtxNg/Summon%20The%20Office%20Daemon.ogg

Its the audio interpretation of a lazy office worker summoning a daemon to do his paper work for him. It would be longer but I’m about as musically skilled as a brick on stilts. Stilts made of gamma radiation. Fuck yeah, make sense of that! I plan to continue it at some point. Chemistry doesn’t let me be creative but this does.

The second assignment was some coding in processing (http://processing.org/) which is essentially Java. Its not too bad. I didn’t even learn to do it in OO but passed with a higher mark than many of the comp sci. students.

I’d post my code but even I know its fucking awful. I knew the majority of my mistakes but I just wanted to get it handed in. Makes me wonder what other people tried to pass off as ‘code’….. qwwertyuiop!

Third assignment is on Google Sketchup. I do not wish to comment on this. You all know why. Its… not real. Why? Why! Its a total waste of time. On the upside, I get credits for this :) Tempted to submit a NetRadiant version as well just for a laugh.

Anyway. Other than that I taught DJSupport some basics in NetRadiant which seems to have paid off well. He picked it up very quick so I’m looking forward to seeing some new maps.

I’m still working on a remake of Q2’s “The Smelter” for Nexuiz but in time I will finish it. I’d really like it to be nicely detailed with a lot to offer. Its a pretty neat map and what I have floating around in my head makes its eye candy horribly complex. It MUST be fancier than the original ;)

Other than that my life has been good, thanks for asking. Chemistry is still a royal pain in the arse of a subject but I hope I get through it.

In other news I’m currently playing through Dragon Age: Origins. Unless you have weeks of your life set apart “studying” or lots of time “reading” don’t play it. It sucks you in.

I had a witty analogy comparing how awesome DA is in comparison to the LHC but I’m quite drunk and forgot. Post suggestions so that I may plag… use them with consent… yeah.

:)

Giuseppe: EDITING ( maps, mods, total conversions )

Editing

Edit means modify. Why modify a game? To make it better, larger, more interesting and give it a longer life. Create a new GUI, add new functions at it, develop new game modes, make new weapon model or player model, create new levels, maps, new environments. There is an ufficial part of this activity, the work of developpers of games. But there is a great part unofficial and very important.

Nice to see this work isnt reserved to ufficial developer and often they incentive and make esier for supporter give their contribute providing tools. A game is great if is funny for players and his life long depending how can mantein alive the interest for that fun. So give the chance to players for expand and customize the game with their creativity is really a good idea and we can see their work sometimes at professional level. An other important thing is that the mods can offer game mode very different from original game, so new players can find interest in the game. I have in mind Nexball, mod that make the fast and frenetic fps Nexuiz similar to a sport game like soccer or basket. And there are the mods total conversions for some games.
Editing world is large and the games that gravitate around are many, so i cant list all. Just few examples.

Mapping is the most diffuse editing activity and imo for two reasons: a new level (map) is the thing that bring interest of players much more of others aspect of game and the tools to make maps are similar at graphic3d sw, so much easier to use instead of write and test sw code to make mods. There are thousands of maps unofficial for games. Just two huge site with a lot of maps: Quake 3 Arena and Nexuiz.

Is just a small introduction to this large world. So there is a lot to talk about…

Sepelio: Review: Section 8

Once again, time for another fabulous review. By me. Again. Yes. Thats right.

This time I shall be going over my impressions of the new/up and coming shooter Section 8

My first impressions of Section 8 ( even before I played it) were of a game attempting to mesh console and PC gaming into one with minimal effort on the developers part.

The first time I played it I decided to jump straight into the singleplayer as I had been told it was like an extended tutorial. This is completely untrue. Any “tutorial” element is left blank for the most part.

The storyline seems bland and the singleplayer lacking.

I played through the first few levels up to the convoy level at which point I gave up. Its not that the AI is a challenging enemy, just that the game quickly overpowers you with LOTS of the wee bastards. There are posts on the official S8 forum of “wtf” at this particular level as many people gave up, some demanding a developers video to see if its actually possible.

The problem is that the enemyAI quickly overpower the average player as well as your own friendly AI being about as useful as Mr Miyagi after he has had his legs broken then the rest of his body fed into a meat grinder. Theres just no fucking chance. This is on normal mode for the love of jebus!

Anyway. Lets brush the singleplayer under the rug and forget about it along with Miyagi’s minced torso. It is definately not what the game is made for.

In multiplayer I have been fortunte enough to be accompanied by one of my good friends as a useful team mate/meatshield. This is rather fortunate.

The multiplayer has been vastly superior to the singleplayer. In my experience it plays like a mesh of Tribes, Halo and Battlefield.

In terms of comparison, your basic movement feels like Halo along with having shields. All the classes are fully customisable like Tribes. Also jetpack, which is awesome. And… the maps feel a lot like Battlefield but with less cover.

Unlike the above though, instead of spawning in preset locations you can spawn where you feel like. Want to drop down and land on the head of that sniper that just fragged you? Go for it. This gives the game a very dynamic edge, with a properly organised team it is easy to capture points that would otherwise be heavily defended.

This does however represent the problem of people simply dropping in behind you, using lock-on and making an extremely lame frag. This brings me onto my next point. Lock-on.

At its basics the lock-on function is auto-aim. I feel primarily it was put into the game for two reasons. When people start jet packing around its a real bugger to hit them, especially with any lag that shows up. This is a pro as it means people can’t just bounce around like morons.

Reason number 2 is that console aiming in this case is even harder when console aiming is generally a bit…. crap. I don’t play this on a console so I will be skipping details of this specific point.

My main annoyance with the lock-on function is its removal of the classic skill of aiming. Anyone can now press the “I win” button and get a free frag if they have the right build setup. This is not entirely a downside however. There are ways to counter this entirely and balance the game. Its already there but I’m not going to tell you what it is :)

Now… the weapons. The weapons seem… ok. They could do with a bit of rebalancing I feel but for the most part they are pretty solid. The assault rifle is an all over “shoot anything that moves” weapon and is the bread and butter of most peoples build. The machinegun sadly feels… more like a sub-machinegun. It doesn’t have the firepower/range etc. that it deserves but it does have a higher shield pierce range making it useful to some extent.

The shotgun is… ok. It definately does the business up close but with any lag/aim failures it becomes utterly crap. I mean… really… just… useless.

The pistol seems like it does damage, but its still a pistol.

The rocketlauncher is…. my major annoyance. It needs to track tanks in lock-on mode which it does not do currently. Does plenty of damage vs placeables though.

The sniper rifle is… well its a sniper rifle isnt it? It does good damage at range and doesnt work if you fire from the hip. It has significant recoil which limits its firing time and its also not 100% accurate. Its a nice support weapon and is great at pulling less sensible defenders away from their posts.

There are also the matter of passive modules and items but they are all fairly useful and self explanitory. Except the nades. They are piss poor, mortar instead. You can use them to make yourself an utter killing machine who can heal himself. It works well, because everyone can do it. Balanced.

I can’t tell if I am rambling now or not but I’m now going to talk about the vehicles.

The basic vehicles are… well theres only two. The heavy armour is basically a walking suit of… well… hitpoints. It has a pretty sweet melee attack vs infantry often resulting in instant kills but its more or less useless against tanks and anything at range. It sports some sort of pea-shooter minigun which does utterly feck all. Its like throwing pebbles at Saturn unless you are at stupidly close range. Even then its massive innacuracy makes it basically useless.

The tank is a slightly different story. It can house 4 players at different weapon stations. The first station is the driver/main gun position. The main gun is pretty sweet. It seems to be hitscan and does the business. The second gun is very similar to the piss poor excuse of a gun that the heavy armour has. Total crap. The third would be the missile launcher which isnt too bad. Its very spammable especially vs vehicles and closeby infantry. The fourth gun is the mortar. I love the mortar. Its so much fun. It does the business. Its a little harder to aim but pays off. My main gripe of the tank is that you can barely tell which way you are facing by its actual body leading to mass confusion. Gotta follow that yellow arrow…

Otherwise my only gripe at the game is that its on Games For Windows Live. Which is poor at best. My computer crashes because of that rather than the actual game (which seems pretty rock stable).  Also, the in game server browser is awful. Despite changing the settings/filters I can’t seem to find any good servers for the most part. It only shows empty ones. No idea why this is, but they are updating soon so hopefully it will improve.

Overall the game is fast paced and pretty fun. With a good squad a lot can be accomplished. Having people cover your back is essential and its very easy to aid your team mates unless you are a complete moron who enjoys eating lead acetate. Tactics are key and you need to adapt dynamically for a lot of different changes. Personally I have a solid bread and butter build, but its mine and I’m not telling you what it is :-)

Overall opinion: Pretty solid/good game, needs some balancing and a few fixes. Stick to multiplayer and find yourself some reliable squad mates.

Sepelio: Does thee work?

Right lets see if this pish works. Time to test my 70wpm typing speed to the limit… while drunk. If I make mistakes its all YOUR fault. Or you’re. Or that other one.

So yeah. Life is fun sometimes. I went to see Electric Wizard the other day, supported by Blood Ceremony. Both of them were excellent live. Ended up going on my own but thats because my friends about about as reliable as an american bank.

So… ya. Pint of Guinness in hand I observed Blood Ceremony who I was extremely surprised by. The usual support band is usually a bunch of half-teens who haven’t figured out their arse from their elbow in terms of style yet.

Not so with Blood Ceremony.

Immediately I was accosted with bass drum, ripping guitar along with the singer passionately hung over a keyboard/synth as the intro ripped through the crowd.

Soon the rest of the band kicked in to unveil a glorious wall of sound. The female vocals to the essentially doom metal style were exquisite. The singer at points switched to playing the flute adding a truly original influence to an already stunning performance. Definately a must see.

Anyway, at first I got the feeling Electric Wizard were too… eh… ‘like me right now’ to actually play. How I was wrong. They entered and greeted the crowd with a cruel blast of low, crunching sound that was welcomed throughout. The musical skill of the band could not be doubted as they powered gradually through a set that included Return Trip, We Hate You, The Chosen Few and Satanic Rites of Drugula amongst others.

By the end I was gobsmacked and assured I had got more than the face price of my ticket. Sadly there was no encore to the deteriorating state of the singers vocal chords, instead they chose to sign tickets and talk to fans which I thought was a very fair compromise despite Jus Oborn’s intermittent coughing fits.

Overall verdict: Fuckin’ phenomenal.

Xeno: Enter Wordpress

During one of the rewrites of my now neglected Nexuiz site, I created my own custom content management system, which I based on XML. It’s basically html with some custom tags and metadata that allows me to dump files into different directories and have them automatically formatted and integrated into the site. Although I’ve reworked that system by dropping XML to use it on a different site, I still haven’t migrated the changes back to this one, mostly because there isn’t any need to.

I had hoped to get some of the {X} Community members to contribute to the site using the old system but I realize that it was probably somewhat of a deterrent to deal with my custom system. On top of that, I would still need to handle uploads of the actual files myself or create some user authentication system to allow users to deal with that themselves. As I’ve been too lazy to migrate the CMS changes, I was even less inclined to do that. Long story short, no content was ever contributed.

After having a look at Guiseppe’s Nexuiz Mapping Guide, I realized that a blog might do the trick. I have no idea if this will catch on but it would be nice to see Xians posting everything from guides to anecdotes about gameplay. It might also breathe a bit of life back into the community after a period of relative silence.
